Transform website tourists into cash.

by Dawn Martinello on October 9, 2009

When someone has searched out your website, they’re ready to buy.  Half the work is already done for you.  So why are your sales in a slump?  Consumers today are all about immediacy.  They want it, and they want it now.  Open up your web browser and head over to your website.  Go ahead, I’ll wait.  Ready?  Good.  Look on your page, and tell me where I find your contact information.  {Did you have to scroll?  Is it on the main page?  How many clicks to find it?}   You’d be surprised just how many consumers will visit your website just to find your contact information so make it easy for them.

Here’s some quick tips on polishing that website to entice those tourist dollars to hit your bank account:

1.  Put your contact information on the main page “above the fold”.  Remember, a potential client may only spend 5 seconds on your site.  Second choice:  Put a link to a contact page in the main navigation menu that will be shown on every page.

2.  Take some time to come up with custom content.  I’m not saying that everyone is stealing content, but rather put some thought into a creative website.  For instance, if you’re a doctor’s office why not name your main page Reception instead of the old-standby “home”.

3.  Start a blog, and if you have one update it!  Not only do search engines love the enriched content but so do the tourists.  Give them a reason to stay past those 5 seconds and a reason to come back again.

4.  Tell me what you can do, but more importantly how you can help me.  It’s not enough for me to tell my tourists that I can create newsletters for them.  I need to explain how that will benefit them.  My tourist needs to think about the freedom that will come from not having to pour hours into researching, designing and writing that newsletter and how the newsletter will help translate into dollars for their business.

5.  Most restaurants have comment cards on each table making it very easy for a diner to leave their thoughts about the restaurant, service, and food.  Do you make it that easy for customers to tell you how you’re doing?  Ask for testimonials and get them up on your site!  Link to their sites and show me thier logos.  Let those tourists know they’re real clients and that they love you!
